Problem with Arduino UNO R4 Minima and Wifi on large sketch

I would like TaskManagerIO to support the Arduino UNO R4 Minima and Wifi.

I have been using TaskManagerIO on a UNO R4 Minima moving code from working code on the UNO R3. The Task code works as expected. When I used a class inheriting BaseEvent the code compiles and loads. It immediately crashes.

I am using WIndows 11 and Arduino IDE 2.3.8. The crash makes the board detach from the USB port and leads to bugs in the Windows USB controller.

I think that I have a similar enough board to test it. I have the R4 WiFi with the led matrix. Could you provide a simple standalone sketch that crashes and I’ll run it on my board. Hopefully with the same result.

In fact I also have an R4 nano I had forgotten about. It is highly likely I can reproduce it.

Ok let me try the task manager stress test when I get in my office on that environment and feed back. It pushes many events and tasks through in a short time. If nothing else it will confirm if there’s an immediate general issue to fix. It will put more pressure on than a typical menu would.

Be careful. My experience has been that the crash corrupted the USB connection on my Windows 11 computer. I had to have another code which I know to be O.K. to load on top of the bad code and then reset the connection. On one occasion I had to reset the USB ports on the computer as well.

Yeah if something hardfaults, depending on how it leaves the usb host it may require a Windows restart. macOS is a bit better at handling it.

Although in most cases I find that double clicking reset works reliably on most Arduino boards in that state, putting them into boot loader mode.

Btw I’ve tried the task manager schedule and event examples on that board and they all ran fine. Can you provide some kind of stripped down example for me to work with?

I would create a test sketch and remove as much of your code as you can, such as peripherals and other functionality. Comment it out a bit at a time and see if it starts up normally.

Another option is to debug the sketch by adding a breakpoint very early on. The Uno R4 has a built-in hardware debugger which makes catching these crashes much easier.

You’ve moved to an architecture that is far less forgiving of memory issues than older Arduino boards. I’ve tried all the library examples on the R4, and I also regularly run a full ⁠tcMenu⁠ application on this board without issue.

(Note: Since the R4 handles USB natively, any hardware crash or freeze will instantly drop the USB connection, causing Windows to panic. If the board ever gets stuck in a crash loop and won't accept an upload, just double-tap the reset button to force it into a stable bootloader recovery mode)
